How to Change the String and Tip on a Pair of Mountain King TrailBlaze Poles

Maintaining your Mountain King TrailBlaze poles is essential for their longevity and performance. The carbide tips can experience a lot of wear and tear and so may need changing. This step-by-step guide will help you replace the string and tip efficiently.

Materials Needed

Step 1: Disassemble the Pole

  1. Fully collapse the pole sections.

  2. Locate the tension cord at the handle end.

  3. Hold the cord firmly and pull to separate the sections, exposing the internal string and the knot securing it.

  4. Using a sharp pair of scissors cut the cord, allowing for the pole to be unthreaded into four separate sections.

Step 2: Remove the old tip

  1. Place the bottom piece into a jug of boiling water for approximately 30 seconds to soften the glue.

  2. Using a pair of gloves carefully place the non hot end into your hands and pliers pull the old tip of removing it form the poles, this will pull the last piece of string through with it.

  3. Ensure all pieces are loose and have no string attached to them.

** Now is a good time to clean the induvial pieces, removing any grit or mud that may have accumulated within the poles. Further take the time to clean the connectors and around the lip of the connectors.

Step 3: Install the New String

  1. Clean the end of the pole, ensuring no old adhesive residue remains.

  2. Place the new carbide and tip into boiling water to help soften the plastic, making installation easier. Make sure completely dry before installing.

  3. Thread the new string with one of the ‘pips’ attached and tided off through the very bottom of the pole, with the pip against the silver bottom connector piece.

  4. Align the new carbide tip with the end of the pole and press it firmly into place.

  5. Tap the tip on a hard surface several times to secure it. Ensure no silver connector can be seen, this means the tip is fully installed.

  6. Typically, no glue is needed, as the friction fit should hold the tip securely.

Step 4: Install the New String

  1. Thread the replacement string through each section of the pole in the correct order.

  2. Ensure the string passes through all necessary guides and openings.

  3. Using your slip joint pliers, pull through the cord until *tight* and secure the knot that will hold your poles in place when running or walking.

  4. Tie a secure knot at the end of the string using the other string pip to ensure your string does not go back down your poles when collapsed down.

  5. Confirm that the knot is positioned correctly to maintain proper tension.

Step 5: Reassemble the Pole

  1. Align and connect the pole sections together.

  2. Pull the tension cord at the handle end until the knot is visible.

  3. Hook the knot into the designated groove to lock the sections securely in place.
